When I found out that this masterpiece was created right in San Sebasti\u00e1n, I couldn&#8217;t resist \u2014 I had to visit the city and try the cheesecake where it all began. So I took the opportunity to plan a long weekend in the Basque Country, using Bilbao as my base. I wasn&#8217;t particularly impressed with my hotel, so I suggest looking for a place in the heart of <strong>Casco Viejo<\/strong>, the city&#8217;s oldest and most charming area, just a short walk from the main attractions. Considered one of the most beautiful parks in Bilbao, it is a perfect example of a romantic garden with fountains, ponds and paths surrounded by lush greenery. We then made our way to <strong>Plaza Moy\u00faa<\/strong>, one of Bilbao&#8217;s most significant squares, surrounded by stunning buildings including the <strong>Ch\u00e1varri Palace<\/strong>.<br \/><br \/><\/p><h3>Pintxos vs tapas: where to eat in Bilbao<\/h3><p>For lunch, we couldn&#8217;t skip trying the famous <strong>pintxos<\/strong> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.restauranteabando.com\/es\">Abando restaurant<\/a>. <strong>But what&#8217;s the difference between pintxos and tapas?<\/strong> While tapas are served in more flexible portions, pintxos are small delicacies served on slices of bread and &#8220;pinned&#8221; with a toothpick. They&#8217;re a true institution in the Basque Country and an absolute must-try for anyone visiting Bilbao!<\/p><h3><br \/>Casco Viejo: Bilbao&#8217;s oldest neighbourhood<\/h3><p>After lunch, we crossed the river to explore <strong>Casco Viejo<\/strong>, the oldest part of the city. This area is a maze of cobblestone streets filled with colourful buildings and traditional shops. I fell in love with the lively and authentic atmosphere here \u2014 it&#8217;s the perfect place to wander aimlessly and let yourself be inspired.<br \/><br \/><\/p><h3>Zubizuri Bridge: Bilbao&#8217;s most iconic modern landmark<\/h3><p>We ended the day with a visit to the famous <strong>Zubizuri Bridge<\/strong>, designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. This pedestrian bridge, with its white structure and futuristic curve, is a modern symbol of Bilbao.<\/p><h3><br \/>Where to eat dinner in Bilbao<\/h3><p>For dinner, I recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/lavinadelensanche.com\/es\/\"><strong>La Vi\u00f1a del Ensanche<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 you can check out the menu <a href=\"https:\/\/carta.lavinadelensanche.com\/carta-eng\/\">here<\/a>. Designed by architect Frank Gehry, this masterpiece of contemporary architecture is renowned for its undulating titanium-clad forms. Inside, you&#8217;ll find modern and contemporary art pieces as well as interactive installations. Outside, make sure to see the giant flower-covered puppy sculpture \u2014 <strong>Puppy<\/strong> \u2014 one of the most photographed works in the city. You can purchase tickets on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guggenheim-bilbao.eus\/en\/hours-and-admission\">official website here<\/a>.<br \/><br \/><\/p><h3>La Ribera Market: the best place for lunch in Bilbao<\/h3><p>After visiting the Guggenheim, head to <strong>La Ribera Market<\/strong> for lunch. This indoor market has it all: fresh produce, local specialties and small taverns where you can enjoy traditional dishes. It&#8217;s a fantastic spot to dive into Basque culinary culture.<\/p><h3><br \/>Bascake: is the cheesecake worth trying?<\/h3><p>We couldn&#8217;t skip dessert \u2014 we tried the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bascake.es\/\">cheesecake at the famous Bascake<\/a>. Unfortunately, we weren&#8217;t very lucky with ours \u2014 it wasn&#8217;t as creamy as I&#8217;d hoped (you know how I am, haha). I even mentioned it on Instagram, and the team managing Bascake&#8217;s page quickly responded, admitting I was right. They explained it hadn&#8217;t been baked properly, apologised, and assured me they&#8217;d be more careful in the future. That said, the flavour was fantastic, so I still recommend it \u2014 I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ll have better luck than I did! \ud83d\ude42<\/p><h3><br \/>Day trips from Bilbao: San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and Guernica<\/h3><p>In the afternoon, you can explore the areas around Bilbao with a short trip. About 45 minutes by car, you&#8217;ll find <strong>San Juan de Gaztelugatxe<\/strong>, a small island connected to the mainland by a long staircase of 241 steps \u2014 a spot that gained fame as a filming location for <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>.<\/p><p><br \/>Another interesting destination is <strong>Guernica<\/strong>, about a 30-minute drive from Bilbao. This town is known for the bombing during the Spanish Civil War, famously depicted in Picasso&#8217;s painting. We strolled along the promenade, taking in the golden sand, stopping often to snap photos and simply enjoying the breathtaking scenery.<br \/><br \/><\/p><h3>Parte Vieja: San Sebasti\u00e1n&#8217;s old town and pintxos paradise<\/h3><p>After our walk, we headed to <strong>Parte Vieja, the old town<\/strong> \u2014 a true paradise for food lovers. This historic neighbourhood is renowned for its <strong>pintxos bars<\/strong>, where you can sample the best Basque specialties served on small slices of bread. Every spot offers an incredible variety of pintxos.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>San Sebasti\u00e1n has a unique atmosphere that feels a bit like Paris, thanks to its elegant architecture and its proximity to the French border, just 20 km away.
