This was our road trip: a couple of days in Lisbon, a stop in Porto, and then the real heart of the journey: <strong>the Algarve, with its spectacular beaches, the Benagil caves and the villages perched above the ocean.<\/strong> We are taking you through it day by day, with up-to-date practical tips, where to sleep and how much we spent.<\/p><p><strong><br \/>In short: an 8-day Portugal itinerary with a rental car.<\/strong> Starting from Lisbon, heading up to Porto, then down along the Algarve (exploring both the east and west coast) and back to Lisbon with a trip to Sintra. <strong>We went in August. The absolute best part? And how could you not pick up a little bottle of holy water near the <strong>Sanctuary of F\u00e1tima<\/strong>? I mean, you never know, right? \ud83d\ude02<br \/>It was a quick stop but a worthwhile one: the sanctuary is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe, and breaking up the almost 3-hour drive does no harm at all.<\/p><h2><br \/>Porto: the city that won us over<\/h2><p>I will be honest: <strong>I loved Porto more than Lisbon.<\/strong> I found it wonderful, colourful and with a character entirely its own. We dropped our bags at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/pt\/pimmshomeribeira.en.html?aid=8065477&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2\">Pimms Home Ribeira<\/a> and got lost on foot through the streets of the <strong>Ribeira<\/strong>, the neighbourhood along the Douro river.<\/p><p>The dream was <strong>Livraria Lello<\/strong>, one of the <strong>most beautiful bookshops in the world<\/strong> and one of the places said to have inspired <strong>J.K. Rowling<\/strong> while she was writing Harry Potter. \u2728 One important tip (learned the hard way): you need a ticket to enter and the <strong>queues are very long<\/strong>. We tried in the late afternoon but it was already too late; the next day at 9am it was already packed despite opening at 9:30. The <strong>Algarve<\/strong> is the southernmost region of Portugal and is split into two distinct sides: the <strong>Barlavento<\/strong> (the western part, the most spectacular and famous, with golden cliffs, caves and postcard-perfect beaches \u2014 Lagos, Portim\u00e3o, Carvoeiro, Albufeira) and the <strong>Sotavento<\/strong> (the eastern part, towards Spain, with long, flat, sandy beaches and the islands of the Ria Formosa \u2014 Faro, Tavira, Olh\u00e3o).<\/p><p><strong>How many days do you need?<\/strong> To enjoy it at a relaxed pace, at least <strong>3-4 days<\/strong> is ideal. And I will say it again: <strong>you need a car.<br \/><br \/><\/strong><\/p><h3>Albufeira<\/h3><p>Our first stop in the Algarve. We stopped at <strong>Praia de S\u00e3o Rafael<\/strong> to cool off: stunning, with its golden cliffs. Then a stroll through the centre of <strong>Albufeira<\/strong>, the most touristy and lively town in the Algarve \u2014 which honestly reminded me of Jesolo in the 90s \ud83d\ude02, so yes to the beach, but don&#8217;t expect an authentic village.<br \/><br \/><\/p><h3>The Benagil caves: how to visit them (updated 2026)<\/h3><p>The <strong>Benagil Cave<\/strong> <strong>is the icon of the Algarve<\/strong>: that rocky dome with the &#8220;hole&#8221; in the ceiling that lets light pour down onto the hidden little beach inside. It is the most beautiful thing we did in the Algarve, but <strong>the rules have changed<\/strong> and it is worth knowing before you go.<\/p><p><strong><br \/>How to visit Benagil today:<\/strong> since 2024 you can only enter the cave <strong>on an authorised guided tour<\/strong> by boat, kayak or SUP. It is <strong>forbidden to swim inside<\/strong> the cave and <strong>forbidden to land<\/strong> on the inner beach (even if you arrive by kayak), and time inside is limited to a few minutes. Tours depart from <strong>Portim\u00e3o<\/strong> (the closest), <strong>Albufeira<\/strong>, <strong>Carvoeiro<\/strong>, <strong>Lagos<\/strong> and <strong>Vilamoura<\/strong>, generally last 2-3 hours, often including <strong>dolphin spotting<\/strong> and other caves, and cost around <strong>\u20ac35-50 per person<\/strong>. Book in advance!<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>We had bought a <strong>2-hour dolphin spotting tour for \u20ac35 per person<\/strong> directly from a stall on the beach in Albufeira, but from what I have read today that kind of &#8220;DIY&#8221; approach is no longer an option: better to book an authorised tour online (I recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.it\/algarve-l66\/benagil-tour-in-kayak-alla-grotta-di-benagil-doccia-gratuita-t216270\/?partner_id=27Z86EE&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher&amp;cmp=portogallo_blog\"><strong>THIS GetYourGuide TOUR<\/strong><\/a>). My favourite: <strong>apple and cinnamon filling.<\/strong> Perfect after a morning of sea and wind.<br \/><br \/><\/p><h3>East coast (Sotavento): Loul\u00e9, Faro and Tavira<\/h3><p>We based ourselves in <strong>Loul\u00e9<\/strong>, which has a beautiful <strong>covered market in Arabic style<\/strong>: I had breakfast there with yogurt, fruit and granola at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bean17coffee\/\">Bean17 Coffee and more<\/a>.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>Then we went to <strong>Faro<\/strong> and lay on the beach for half an hour enjoying the breeze \u2014 but no swimming, because the <strong>water was freezing<\/strong> (the Atlantic shows no mercy, not even in summer \ud83d\ude02). We then visited <strong>Tavira<\/strong>: nice, but honestly I had expected better.<br \/><br \/><\/p><h3>Vilamoura<\/h3><p>For dinner we moved on to <strong>Vilamoura<\/strong>, the &#8220;Beverly Hills of Portugal&#8221; \ud83d\ude0e: among yachts and elegant buildings, it is perfect for an evening stroll along the marina.<br \/><br \/><\/p><h3>West coast (Barlavento): the most beautiful beaches \ud83c\udfd6\ufe0f<\/h3><p>And here, in our opinion, is the <strong>best of the Algarve.<\/strong> We dedicated a whole day to the west coast:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Lagos<\/strong> \u2014 a lively town full of life, with lots of little shops and surf board stalls and lessons. Breakfast at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/coffeeandwaves\/\">Coffee&amp;Waves<\/a> with a\u00e7a\u00ed, yogurt, fruit and granola. So good!<\/li><li><strong>Praia de Dona Ana<\/strong> \u2014 stunning, one of the most photographed beaches in the Algarve.<\/li><li><strong>Praia da Luz<\/strong> \u2014 a brief stop, quiet and relaxed.<\/li><li><strong>Fortaleza de Sagres<\/strong> and <strong>Cabo de S\u00e3o Vicente<\/strong> \u2014 the southwesternmost point of Portugal (and of continental Europe): a wild clifftop headland above the ocean, spectacular especially around sunset.<\/li><li><strong>Praia do Beliche<\/strong> \u2014 a wonderful and quiet little beach nestled between the Fortaleza and the Cape.<\/li><li><strong>Praia de Arrifana<\/strong> \u2014 equally stunning; If you want to combine it with Lisbon and Porto like we did, factor in another 3 days.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p><strong>Do you need a car in the Algarve?<\/strong> Yes. The most beautiful beaches and villages are scattered along the coast and poorly connected by public transport: renting a car is the best (and most flexible) way to explore it.<\/p><p><strong><br \/>How do you visit the Benagil caves?<\/strong> Since 2024 you can only enter on an authorised guided tour (boat, kayak or SUP): swimming inside and landing on the inner beach are both forbidden. Tours depart from Portim\u00e3o, Albufeira, Lagos, Carvoeiro and Vilamoura, last 2-3 hours (often including dolphins) and cost around \u20ac35-50.
